The Mechanics of Inference

Inference is the cognitive process of deriving implicit meaning by merging explicit textual evidence with logical reasoning or prior schema.
The formula for bridging the gap between what is said and what is meant.

The result is a 'guess' or 'assumption', not a valid inference.
Bridging the Gap: Inferences address the 'unsaid' space between literal statements.
Evidence-Based: Every valid inference must be traceable back to specific words or patterns in the text.
Degree of Certainty: Strong inferences have multiple converging clues; weak inferences rest on a single ambiguous detail — prefer the answer with the most textual support.

Implied Meanings and Tone Signals

Authors convey implied meanings through word choice, connotation, juxtaposition, and structural emphasis rather than direct statement.
Connotation over Denotation: 'Slender' vs 'skinny' vs 'emaciated' all denote thinness but carry positive, neutral, and negative connotations respectively — the author's choice reveals their attitude.
Scare Quotes: Quotation marks around a word (e.g., the 'expert') signal irony or skepticism without the author stating disagreement outright.
Strategic Juxtaposition: Placing two contrasting ideas side by side (e.g., 'The CEO announced record profits. That evening, 200 workers were laid off.') forces the reader to infer a connection the author never explicitly draws.
Rhetorical Questions: Questions the author doesn't answer (e.g., 'Can we really afford to wait?') imply the answer is obvious — usually 'no'.

Drawing Conclusions

A conclusion is a global judgment reached by synthesis—the process of accumulating multiple inferences into a single, comprehensive realization.
A conclusion is the summation of localized clues into a final ruling.

Contradictory Evidence
A conclusion must weigh the preponderance of evidence, not just a single outlier.
Final Judgment: While an inference might explain a single character's action, a conclusion explains the overall theme or purpose.
Logical Consequence: It must follow necessarily from the premise provided by the author.
Summary ≠ Conclusion: A summary restates what happened; a conclusion explains what it means or why it matters.

Making Predictions

A prediction extends inference into the future by asking what is likely to happen next, based on established patterns, character behavior, or causal chains within the passage.
Pattern-Based: If a passage establishes a trend (e.g., declining enrollment over three years), predicting continued decline is valid; predicting a sudden reversal requires new evidence.
Character-Based: Actions, dialogue, and established motivations let you predict a character's next move — a character described as cautious and risk-averse is unlikely to make a rash decision.
Causal Chain: If the passage establishes that A causes B, and B causes C, predicting C when A is present is valid inference, not extrapolation.

The Scope Rule

Valid inferences must remain within the passage scope; extending logic into over-generalization or personal assumptions creates invalid arguments.
Logical claims must be a subset of the provided context.

Absolute Qualifiers
Words like 'all', 'never', or 'always' often push an inference out of scope.
The Boundary: If the passage discusses 'some' birds, an inference about 'all' birds is an extrapolation error.
Objective Distance: Separate what you know about the world from what the passage specifically states — outside knowledge that 'feels right' is still out of scope.
Qualifier Strength Ladder: 'All/never' (strongest) → 'most/generally' (moderate) → 'some/may/often' (weakest). Stronger qualifiers require stronger evidence to justify.

Elimination Strategies

Invalid inferences fall into recognizable patterns based on how they violate scope, specificity, or logical direction.
Absolute Qualifier Error: Claims containing 'always', 'never', 'all', 'none', or 'only' require universal evidence — passages rarely provide it.
Out-of-Scope Error: A claim sounds reasonable based on general knowledge but nothing in the passage supports it.
Scope Mismatch: A claim captures only one detail (too narrow) or leaps to a universal claim (too broad) instead of matching the passage's actual scope.
Logical Reversal: A claim states the opposite of what the passage implies — often caused by misreading negation, irony, or concession structures.

Question Patterns

Standardized tests use specific trigger words to signal whether the goal is a localized inference or a global conclusion.
Inference Triggers: 'It can be inferred...', 'The passage suggests...', 'The author implies...' — focus on specific clues in a targeted part of the passage.
Conclusion Triggers: 'Which of the following can be concluded...', 'The author's primary purpose...', 'The passage as a whole suggests...' — require synthesizing the entire passage.
Prediction Triggers: 'Based on the passage, what would most likely happen if...', 'The author would most likely agree that...' — extend established logic forward.
Tone/Attitude Triggers: 'The author's attitude toward X is best described as...' — require reading connotation, word choice, and structural emphasis.
